At ToughDepot.com we always have standard models in stock.

As of July 2016 there are 2 versions: MK1 with Core i5 2.3GHz and MK2 with Core i5-6300 2.4GHz. There is no other difference in hardware besides the CPU. The CF-54 MK2 is still available with Windows 7 Pro. Windows 8.1 has been replaced with Windows 10.

The Toughbook CF-54 was launched in June 2015. It is a semi-rugged model and a close cousin of Toughbook CF-53. The CF-54 comes in 4 flavors:

  • Lite
  • Prime
  • Gloved Multi Touch
  • Performance

CF-53 Options

  • 4G LTE Modem
  • Backlit keyboard
  • Smart card reader
  • Fingerprint reader
  • Solid state drive
  • 2nd LAN
  • 2nd Battery (hot swappable)
  • DVD Drive
  • GPS (ublox)
  • 4th USB
  • VGA Port

Expansion Ports

The built-in true serial (RS-232) port has always been a unique feature of all Toughbooks. All other manufacturers dropped it more than 10 years ago. The CF-54 is the first Toughbook that does not offer serial port by default. The option is still available as a special configuration on models like CF-54A9001CM (Prime) and CF-54C9001CM (FHD Touch).

- USB Ports
3 USB ports vs. 4 on CF-53. There is an option to add 4th USB port for $75 or industrial grade USB for $125.

- VGA port is only available as an add-on $75 option, but with present HDMI port connecting to external monitor should not be a problem.

Standard keyboard is very good for typing.

The keyboards on CF-52, CF-53, CF-30 and CF-31 MK1-MK4 were inter compatible to some degree which means we are talking about 7 generations of Toughbooks (almost 8 years). While users never complained much about Toughbook keyboards, the updated CF-54 keyboard design is a welcome feature. As with previous generations the CF-54 keyboard is spill proof. Rain, spilled drinks pose no threat. The base CF-54 (Lite) comes with regular keyboard. All other versions feature backlit keyboard. They are both visually the same. The buttons on CF-54 keyboard are nicely spaced, have a good travel and easy to type.

Hard Drive

Sliding out HDD caddy is on the right side.

Panasonic always had been conservative when it came to hard drive sizes. When other industry players were using 320GB hard drives – Panasonic used 160GB. When 500GB and even 1TB became common (around 2012) – Panasonic used 320GB. Finally, in 2015 the smallest hard drive size for Toughbook CF-54 is 500GB. But not without the catch: while Prime model features 500GB 7200RPM hard drive, the base CF-54 model called Lite comes with 5400RPM version.

At ToughDepot.com we recognize this drawback and all our CF-54 models including Lite versions come with upgraded 500GB 7200RPM hard drives. What makes the CF-54 different from other Toughbooks including CF-53 is a PCI-e slot for 2nd mSATA solid state drive. Recently prices for mSATA drives went down sharply. The 128GB SSD option starts from $125. With the dual hard drive setup the OS and programs can be installed on SSD. This greatly improves system boot time (from 25 seconds down to 8). The program generated data like CAD files, videos and images can be stored on 500GB mechanical drive. This setup is the best of both worlds and we highly recommend dual hard drive configuration.

Panasonic CF-54 has 3 outdoor readable LCD options: base (1366x768 pixel), models with Full HD (1920x1080) and Full HD with multi-touch screen.

If you just bought CF-53 don’t get upset: stick to it until it starts falling apart. And from our experience it will take a long time. Otherwise, we recommend CF-54. You will have slightly faster processor, slim design, dual hard drive setup capability and 1.6lb less to carry around.
