Microsoft Windows 10 Transition:

Microsoft is now requiring all PC OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) to transition their devices to Windows 10. There are several notable dates of interest:

  • June 30th, 2016: Windows 8.1 Pro licensed units with a Windows 7 Pro downgrade will end.
  • October 31st, 2016: Windows 8.1 Pro licensed units and factory downgraded Windows 7 Pro units of any kind will end.
  • October 31st, 2017: Availability of Windows 7 Pro downgrade restore DVDs will end.

This means that Windows 10 licensed units with a downgrade to Windows 7 will remain available until October 31st. After that, Windows 7 downgrades will be available for another 12 months, but only by ordering a restore DVD after taking delivery of a Toughbook.

In practice, this will create several challenges for Toughbook customers. Panasonic is currently transitioning SKUs away from Windows 8.1 Licensed units. After October 31st, Panasonic must turn around and discontinue distribution of any newly created SKUs that are licensed for Windows 10 but come pre-loaded with Windows 7 Pro. The creation and transition of new SKUs will inevitably result in longer than expected lead-times and a variety of availability issues. Be sure to discuss your organization’s specific needs in depth with your sales representative to make sure these licensing transitions and dates are fully understood and any pitfalls and potential challenges are addressed.

Panasonic Toughbook CF-19. After October 31st, only a Windows 7 Pro Embedded operating system will be offered. Please be advised this is not a normal operating system. Microsoft will require end-users to purchase a Volume Licensing Agreement in order to legally image a Toughbook 19 with a normal, Windows 7 Pro operating system. This effectively marks the end of the Toughbook 19 for most customers. The new Toughbook 20 is the replacement solution.

How to change Windows 7 32-bit to 64-bit version.

2. Using arrow keys navigate to last tab called “Exit”.
3. Almost at the bottom of Exit tab choose “Repair your computer” option. Press F10 to save and reboot.
4. Computer will reboot into recovery mode. Choose “Reinstall OS to factory condition” and follow instructions. System will offer choice of 32 or 64-bit version.
5. Continue with onscreen instructions to reinstall OS of your choice.

After April 8th, 2014, technical support for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates. This means that if your customers continue to use Windows XP their PCs will still work but they will be vulnerable to security risks and viruses and in the future they may find that other software and hardware products will not work with this version of Windows. They will also not receive software updates from Windows Update, which installs the latest software updates to improve the reliability of Windows.
